Overview

Nestled in the vibrant district of Tanjung Tokong, Penang, Cheah Yew offers a genuine taste of Malaysian home-cooked meals, with a focus on chicken and vegetable dishes. The name itself—derived from 佳友, meaning "Best Friends"—aptly reflects the warm and welcoming atmosphere that patrons repeatedly praise. This restaurant is an embodiment of the economy rice tradition that is uniquely Malaysian: a no-frills, communal dining experience where simplicity meets comfort.

The heart of Cheah Yew lies in its steady, flavorful home-style cuisine. Patrons like Lady Demerzel highlight the consistent quality and authentic flavors that evoke a true sense of nostalgia. The dishes, featuring tender chicken preparations and a variety of fresh vegetables, maintain the same beloved taste each visit—a testament to the proprietor’s dedication to tradition and consistency. This reliability makes Cheah Yew a favorite among locals and an excellent stop for tourists seeking the essence of Penang’s home-cooked fare.

The restaurant’s layout presents a traditional setup where the main proprietor serves economy rice buffet-style, sharing space with hawker stalls offering complementary dishes. This communal arrangement enriches the dining experience, blending variety with affordability. The presence of freshly made drinks enhances the meal, keeping with the Malaysian dining custom.

Cheah Yew is particularly popular with university students and working professionals who appreciate hearty, affordable meals outside the typical school or office canteens. Its location, just a short walk from major bus stops like Penang Island Plaza, ensures easy accessibility. The space is casual and unpretentious, making it an ideal spot for a quick yet fulfilling lunch or breakfast.

Among the standout offerings are the crispy fried chicken skin, succulent chicken thigh chop, and the beloved mala potatoes, all crowd favorites that disappear fast. Mee goreng enthusiasts will find the rendition here notably competitive with other local staples, while subtle critiques such as slightly chewy sotong reflect the honest, home-style nature of the kitchen.

Beyond the food, what truly elevates Cheah Yew is the service. Customers consistently note the friendly, fair, and courteous attitude of the staff and proprietor, fostering a sense of community where diners from all walks of life feel welcome. Whether you’re a blue-collar worker, a white-collar professional, or a retiree, Cheah Yew stands as a beacon of value and heartfelt hospitality.

For anyone interested in exploring Penang’s culinary roots beyond the tourist spots, Cheah Yew presents an authentic, affordable, and accessible gateway into the everyday flavors and spirit of Malaysian home cooking.

Cheah Yew is the phonetic for the Chinese Word 佳友, meaning Best Friends. It is the name of this Restaurant. This type of restaurant is commonly found in Malaysia, I might say, it may only be found in Malaysia. The setting is the main restaurant with a few hawker's stall rented to hawker operators selling food other than what the proprietor is selling, usually the proprietor sells the Economy Rice (Buffet Style Home Cook dishes with or without rice) Other more common practice, the proprietor sells the drinks. 5 stars, because (1) This place is run by very good mannered, friendly and fair people. (2) The food reminds me of home cooked food that I go home to (in Penang Malaysia) (3) Their Standard in taste, food I like will always have the exact same yumness! I never go to this place to find that they have served that particular dish I like in a different way or that it taste slightly different or the meat is tougher. It is always that same yumness I expected the food to be. Strongly recommend any tourist who like to know what Penang Home cook meal taste like to visit them (4) Any one can get to this place easily via the 101 Rapid Penang Bus, get off the bus at the bus stop opposite Penang Island Plaza, the shop is walking distance from the bus stop. Last but not least (5) It is the cheapest restaurant where you can fill your empty stomach. That is where the "fair" comes from, the restaurant feeds everyone! White collar , blue collar , retired people, so affordable and so friendly. I went there recently and my Dad was saying, RM12.80 for a 2 person's lunch, couldn't even pay for a plate of Kangkung Belacan in any other restaurant. Keep Up the Good Work Cheah Yew.

This is a great spot for university students to enjoy rice-based breakfast and lunch as an alternative to the school canteen. To secure a table, it’s best to avoid peak hours. The fried chicken skin and fried chicken thigh-based chicken chop are must-tries, while the mala potatoes are a best-seller, flying off the shelves like hotcakes! The owner is steady, friendly, and the prices are reasonable.

mee goreng is about as good as you'll find in area. more than holds its own against mamak chain uphill, and food courts down. only quibble is that sotong is bit chewy.

Best economy rice with it's many choices and low price. Could be one of the cheapest in the whole of Penang. Queue can be long so be patient. Not recommended to eat there as it is very very warm inside. Good for tapao...
